The Hammerhead was developed in response to humanity’s introduction to sub-fighters. The Commonwealth discovered that they lacked the ability to make their own sub-fighters, but they had managed to perfect the miniature torpedoes that they had intended to arm them with. Undeterred by the project’s failure, they cannibalized the weapons and created the Hammerhead-class, a defensive submarine meant to protect allied vessels from enemy torpedoes and sub-fighters.
Measuring 65 meters long, the Hammerhead is a fairly small vessel. It has thin armor, and lacks any sort of shielding. Luckily, it was designed specifically to counter most of the weapons that could be used against it.
The Hammerhead is armed with 40 micro torpedo tubes, 20 in each side of the hull. These torpedoes are small and maneuverable, able to hit fast targets that full-sized torpedoes would be useless against. However, given their small explosive charges, they lack the power to cause significant damage to enemy warships. For this, the Hammerhead instead has four heavy forward torpedo tubes, which launch powerful anti ship warheads.
The Hammerhead is used to escort Unity-class vessels, providing them with defense against submerged threats. The overwhelming volleys they can launch have proven incredibly effective at halting submersible and torpedo attacks.
